A recent study from the University of Alabama found kids’ school uniforms have no effect on “substance use, behavioral problems, or attendance,” and even discouraged students from attending. So why are they popular the world over?

Americans love to splurge on French Toast uniforms, especially in the rapidly reproducing charter school culture. Japan is famous for a strict code of uniforms based on European sailor garb.  Britishers have different ones for every part of the United Kingdom from Scotland to Wales, down to individual schools! The school uniform is ubiquitous, even when no European influence can be detected; Brazil garbs their kids in bright green and yellow, while China’s favorite is the comfy track suit.

Perhaps the draw is in the preparatory appeal: parents want their kids to grow up and get jobs where everyone dresses the same, and in a certain professionalism. Many countries definitely express a unique national character–French schools reputedly reject the idea out of hand, citing their liberal culture. Finding the perfect girls school skirt or boys school pants is also a valuable bonding experience, a unique occasion where the children can experience firsthand all the thought and money that goes into their parents’ care. Whatever the reason we keep the tradition, it is apparent school uniforms are here to stay.

Buying school uniforms should be a straightforward process. Unfortunately, if you are new to buying them, it can be a confusing, and potentially very expensive, prospect.  Buying all of your child’s uniform clothing at retail from the mall or a department store is a good way to waste money. Buying from a uniform supplier will ensure your child has quality clothes that look good while not breaking the bank. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of school uniforms:

  1. Be choosey about the brand names you pick. There are plenty of brand names, such as the ones sold here at S&D, that are high quality without the added cost of designer labels.
  2. Review the different types of garments. Most kids school uniform companies, like French Toast, offer many different styles of pants and shirts. Be sure to get something that matches your school’s recommendations but also meshes with what your child likes to wear. Do not be afraid to mix and match styles and brands.
  3. Take advantage of deals. If you happen to see girls’ skirts on sale, buy more than you need. You never know when she may rip the skirt by accident and you need a replacement, fast. Having extra uniform pieces is never a bad idea.

JanSport backpacks have been around for a long time, and are among the most iconic pieces of American outdoor gear. The panel loading day pack, which is still sold, (varieties of it are available on sndkids) is one of JanSport’s enduring innovations. In fact, before JanSport came along the only style of backpack that was readily available was a top loading dray string style that had existed for ages.

The 70′s were JanSport’s period of greatest innovation as they pioneered the sort of technical backpacks that have become the norm for outdoor expeditions the world over. The company was borne out of a lightweight, tubular aluminum trekking backpack and flourished from there.  They were among the first manufacturers to use ballistic nylon in their manufacturing and the modern, sporty shapes and designs they created have come to represent what a backpack is, and are a far cry from the paramilitary backpacks of the past.

One of the best features of JanSport backpacks, one that they share with other premier book-bag makers is that JanSport offers a full lifetime warranty. That means that no matter what, JanSport will replace or repair a backpack if it fails in any way. That’s a pretty good deal, especially considering that most of JanSport’s bags retail for less than $50.

Just because it is getting colder outside does not mean recess is going anywhere. Kids will still be running around outside, getting into all types of mess and wildness. Except they will be doing it in weather that will leave them muddy and cold, that is unless they have the right clothing. While your little boy probably does not need the heaviest parka available, any kid that walks to school, plays outside and does so all year round needs a good jacket. We have a variety of North Face and Polo Ralph Lauren jackets that can grow with your kid, and will keep them warm through the chilly fall rains, icy winter and unpredictable early spring.

Hardshell jackets are great for places with variable weather and are good at taking a beating. The North Face Resolve jacket is a perfect hardshell for an active kid. It is waterproof, breathable and resists stains. A slightly loose fit allows layering under the jacket, making it a perfect choice for cool weather.

In colder climates, a simple shell is not going to do, but a dedicated parka can sometimes seem like a bit of overkill.  A down puffer jacket might be just the solution. the North Face Nuptse offers a real down liner with a water resistant outer. It will keep your little one warm without being too big and bulky to actually wear.

There are only three weeks left until the start of school. It sounds like a blessing and a curse. Only three weeks until the kids are back in classes and no longer free to roam about 24/7. As a parent you may be excited for this,  but there are  only three weeks until they’re going to need stuff you should have bought three weeks ago. Namely  kids school uniforms.

There are so many things you need to get for back to school. Bookbags, pencils, notebooks the list is endless for every family. How about you do yourself a favor and cut one of those items out before it drives you crazy. Buy your kid’s school uniforms online ans save both time and money in the process.

Depending on what you children need, they probably don’t want to go shopping for uniforms, moreover finding decent uniform appropriate clothes locally can be tough. You don’t want to send them to school in ill fitting khakis and sweater vests. Why not buy kids school uniforms online from a retailer that knows what kids will and won’t wear.  When you have to buy the whole ensamble, things become much easier when you can do it in one fell swoop. S&D Kids has the variety to keep your kids looking presentable at prices your wallet can deal with.

Winter hasn’t really shown itself here on the eastern seaboard thus far this winter. However, it’s starting to get bitingly cold finally on the day after New Year’s. Ironically, this is the same day that a lot of people are heading back to work and/or school. If you’re sending your child off today, you might have noticed the drastic temperature drop. Kids wearing kids school uniforms are likely shivering waiting for the bus stop. Don’t worry though, here are some tips on how to keep your kids toasty warm during the winter months.

First, make sure your boys school pants are of a heavy material. If this means that they have summer pants and winter pants, so be it. It’s worth it to keep them comfortable. Heavy materials like wool work well but make sure your child can handle it as some sensitive skin finds wool very uncomfortable and itchy. Secondly, make sure your girls school uniforms include a nice heavy pair of leggings. This will ensure that tiny little legs stay warm even on the coldest day.

If you’re doing both of these things and your child is still a little chilly, try looking for a school approved sweater or sweatshirt to bundle up on those cold winter days!

When it comes to buying boys school pants, sometimes you get scared that you’ll buy pants too long or too short. You don’t know which way to go about it and sometimes, you don’t even have a choice. The waist size that works right for your kid may automatically come with a super long or short pant leg. So, you’ll probably have to get the pants hemmed.

When bringing boys school pants for hemming, the best sort of hem to get is having some fabric pinned up, instead of just cut off. That way as your child grows in height, you can just bring down the hem instead of  buying new pants. And that pair that was once too long, now fits great.

You should also be careful not to alter the pants too much that they then don’t adhere to dress guidelines. Though your son may not love the fit overall, it may be that way for a reason, and too much alteration could get him in trouble when his uniform doesn’t look the same as that of other students.

Be careful when hemming, whether yourself or hiring a professional, and your son will look great in his school pants for the entire school year.

When it comes to measuring for your son and his school uniform, it doesn’t have to be as tough as it seems. You can follow a few simple steps and make sure his boys school pants fit properly no matter what he’s doing, whether sitting in class or running for the bus in the morning.

Before you make any measurements, you want your son to adjust the pair of pants to where he will be wearing them, NOT where you think they should be. You have to be realistic about where they may fall and be comfortable. You should measure around the waist, just below the navel, for an accurate waist measurement. Measuring at this slightly wider point will allow for space for shirts to be tucked in.

For length, measure from the middle of the crotch seam to the bottom of the pants hem. The length should be to about the middle of the shoe, to at least the top of the heel. You can always add an extra inch to account for growing, as kids always are!

Make sure your son’s boys school pants are the right fit and they’ll be perfect for him for at least the semester, hopefully the whole year before he grows too much!
